The first Baltic UrbCulturalPlanning Conference Urban Transformation through Art and Culture is happening in Kiel: a gathering of urbanists and city planners, artists, researchers and academics, students, community organizers, politicians and activists, to explore key aspects of taking an art and cultural perspective in urban strategies and practice.

The purpose of the conference is to explore new prototypes for models of integrated urban strategies, as well as people and place-based approaches to dealing with the social, cultural, and environmental challenges many cities are facing. The key to this approach is the potential for art and culture to act as catalyst for creative communities, seeking to engage with citizens in the process of sustainable urban transformation.
The Kiel conference will be followed up with Baltic conferences in Gdansk in 2020, and the final conference in Riga in 2021.
Keynotes will provide the theoretical cornerstones of the conference and nine breakout sessions and workshops will engage participants in different aspects of cultural planning. This includes artistic action and transformation, participation, engagement and activism, as well as policy and planning related strategies and models.
Panel discussions will provide new perspectives and give new insights to trigger change.
A practical approach to cultural mapping will be experienced through specific city walks, which are designed and conducted in cooperation with the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design (MKH), the City of Kiel, as well as with other networks that work at the intersection of art and design and urban society. Cases of art and culture driven Social Innovation from neighborhoods in seven countries in the Baltic Region will be presented and discussed.
